Overview

The Southern most point of the Italian peninsula, Calabria is a mysterious and exotic region. Home to ancient villages and a rocky, bucolic landscape that has been unaltered by the centuries, it is an area that is steeped in tradition. It is reputed to be the birthplace of Italian winemaking. Today, it is an area quickly emerging as one of the country's most dynamic growing zones, an area currently enjoying a renaissance in the production of great wine.

The most important viticultural area of Calabria, Ciro became a DOC in 1969. Produced across 4 subzones situated between the Ionian coast and the inland foot hills of the La Sila plateau, the wines are largely derived from 2 of Italy's oldest grape varieties - Greco and Gaglioppo. The latter is part ofthe Sangiovese family and likely an ancestor to that noble grape. Tannic and full bodied, it is a wine that is designed to age. Working exclusively with the region's historic wines, the estate employs organic farming methods across its 6 hectares of vines. It also employs natural fermentation for all of its wines, providing each with a freshness seldom found in the Ciro zone. Elegant yet earthy, these are wines that are not to be missed.
