Veneto

The largest region of Northeastern Italy, Veneto is straddled by Trentino-Alto Adige to the Northwest and Friuli Venezia Giulia to the Northeast. The capital city, Venice, has long been famous for its Murano glass and as a tourist destination. The same is true for the other main city of Verona, home to Romeo & Juliet.

The winemaking traditions of Veneto are truly ancient. Wine production has occurred across the region since Roman times, and several key growing sub-zones still employ ancient grape drying methods (appassimento) prior to pressing them into wine. Modern Veneto has also become famous for its production of great sparkling wines.

The terroir in Veneto is equally diverse. The Northern part of the region is mountainous, gradually descending into rocky foothills near Treviso. Closer to Venice, the terrain becomes marshier and gives way to the Po River Valley plain, extremely fertile in its lower portions and prone to agricultural use. Many of the region’s greatest wines come from this area.
