Piemonte

Translated as “the foot of the mountain”, Piemonte is the largest region in Northwestern Italy. It straddles the other regions, like its neighbors sharing a border with France (to the West) and Switzerland (to the North). The capital city of Torino is one of Italy’s most cultured and historic cities, famous for its Shroud and countless museums. It is also the ancestral seat of the House of Savoy, historical overlords of Piemonte and Sardegna and rulers of all Italy following its unification in 1861.

NOTEWORTHY DOC & DOCG SUB-ZONES OF PIEMONTE

The terroir for winemaking in Piemonte is both immense and extremely diverse. The region’s Southeastern corner is dominated by the Colli Tortonesi, a large sub-zone that marries a lower elevation, western edge of the fertile Val Padana with a higher elevation area tucked into the Apennine mountains.

Southern Piemonte is a combination of clay and sandy soils, particularly near the city of Alessandria and the famous villages of Gavi. Turning northward, the rolling hills of Central Piemonte offer an ever-changing landscape of soils and micro climates, culminating in a network of superior quality production areas that can be found near the small cities of Asti and Alba. Fossil remnants from a shallow sea once covering a part of this area add further complexity to the soil and wines of this region.

Welcome to the ancestral home of Nebbiolo.

The terroir of Northern Piemonte is something entirely different. Also known as the Alto Piemonte, this area is divided by the Sesia River into two distinct terroir — themorainic soils of Colline Novaresi and the volcanic soils of Coste della Sesia, remnants of the area’s famous “Super-Volcano”. At the region’s Northernmost boundary is the hill of Carema, nestled against the Alps and Dora Baltea River.
