TAVOLO VIGNETO
Il Poggio di Gavi
Located in the tiny village of Rovereto and just outside the town of Gavi, the Il Poggio di Gavi estate represents a transformation of a gentleman's pastime into a woman's passion.
Overview
Hidden in the hills of Piemonte's Alessandria province and close to the Ligurian coast, the villages of Gavi have long been recognized as the home of one of Italy's most important white wines. Reputedly named for a Germanic princess of mythical origin, the area has been famous since the 17th century for its brilliant, dry white wine produced from a variant of an ancient Roman grape called Cortese. It's worth noting that much of modern Northern Italy grows this grape variety - it is, however, nowhere better produced than in the villages of Gavi.
Originally purchased by the Odone family in 1919 for use as a hunting preserve, the three hectares estate began producing wines in 1976. Boasting a unique terroir rich in both sandy and clay soil, the wines produced here possess amazing minerality and structure that is balanced by a sexy, floral character. Farmed using sustainable methods, this tiny property is one the area's hidden gems.
