I Carpini

Founded in 1998 by the Ghislandi family, Cascina I Carpini is one of the Colli Tortonesi’s most innovative wineries. Named for the hornbeam trees that dot the landscape near the small village of Pozzol Groppo, the estate is committed to preserving the local eco-system through a holistic approach and strict adherence to organic methods.

Overview

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Piemonte near its border with Lombardia and the Oltrepo Pavese, the Colli Tortonesi DOC is one of Northern Italy’s hidden gems. A DOC encompassing 47 different municipalities and some 1,800 hectares of vines, this unique zone is a mixture of hills and valleys rising from the Po River to Apennine mountains. Boasting soils largely based around Marnedi Sant’Agata (similar to what is found in Barolo and the Langhe), the area has long been famous for the superior quality of its Barbera. It is also home to one of Northern Italy’s most interesting white grapes — Timorasso.

The vineyards are exclusively planted to the district’s traditional varieties — Barbera, Timorasso, and Albarossa. No herbicides are used, and the winery’s low environmental impact has brought it the “Green Care” certification. Even the application of sulfites is done in an extremely limited manner.
