Abruzzo

Located on the Adriatic coast, Abruzzo is directly to the South of Marche. Mountainous at its Westernmost edge (the area includes some of the highest peaks in the Apennine mountains), the region is divided into four provinces — L’Aquila (inland), Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti (all on the coast). Often more culturally aligned with Southern Italy, the region was once part of the “Kingdom of the Two Sicilies” governed by the House of Bourbon.

The viticultural tradition in Abruzzo is ancient. As in the neighboring regions of Marche and Molise, winemaking is largely concentrated along the coast. It is most famous for the production of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (a variation of Sangiovese that has its origins in the Tuscan city of the same name), but has also become known for the production of several intriguing white wine grapes — Pecorino, Passerina, and Trebbiano.
